The 12 Zodiac Signs

Last updated: May 12, 20265 min readBy the NatalCalculator.com Editorial Team · Reviewed for Astrological Accuracy

The zodiac is a 360° band along the ecliptic divided into twelve 30° sectors. Each sign has a name, a symbol, an element (fire, earth, air, water), a modality (cardinal, fixed, mutable), and a ruling planet. The signs are not personality types in themselves; they are qualities that flavour whatever planet sits in them. Sun in Aries is conscious identity acted out with Aries energy; Mars in Aries is drive expressed in Aries' direct, forward-leaning style. To know your full astrological profile, cast your chart on the free birth chart calculator — the Sun sign is one part of twelve.

The four elements

Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) is enthusiasm, assertion, vision. Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) is embodiment, practicality, patience. Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) is thought, connection, principle. Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) is feeling, intuition, depth. Most people are stronger in some elements than others; the missing element is often a lifelong learning area.

The three modalities

Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) initiate. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sustain. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) adapt. The modality of a sign tells you its mode of action; the element tells you its quality.

Aries (Mar 21 - Apr 19)

Cardinal Fire, ruled by Mars. The first sign of the zodiac. Aries initiates: it is the spark, the impulse, the bright forward push at the start of a season. People with strong Aries placements are direct, courageous, impatient with deliberation, and most alive when they are moving. The shadow is anger that flares before consideration. The gift is honesty without hesitation. Famous Aries: Vincent van Gogh, Maya Angelou, Lady Gaga.

Taurus (Apr 20 - May 20)

Fixed Earth, ruled by Venus. The second sign. Taurus settles. It is the body, the garden, the slow steady accumulation of what lasts. Taurus placements bring patience, sensuality, and a deep aversion to being hurried. The shadow is stubbornness and over-attachment. The gift is reliability and beauty cultivated over time. Famous Taureans: William Shakespeare, Audrey Hepburn, David Attenborough.

Gemini (May 21 - Jun 20)

Mutable Air, ruled by Mercury. The third sign. Gemini connects. It is conversation, curiosity, the simultaneous holding of contradictory positions. Gemini placements are quick, witty, restless, and often pursue many lives at once. The shadow is scattering and inconsistency. The gift is brilliance applied to whatever is in front of it. Famous Geminis: Anne Frank, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe.

Cancer (Jun 21 - Jul 22)

Cardinal Water, ruled by the Moon. The fourth sign. Cancer holds. It is the home, the mother, the protective shell built around what matters. Cancer placements are receptive, tenacious, deeply loyal, and often more ambitious than they appear. The shadow is moodiness and grudge-holding. The gift is genuine emotional intelligence. Famous Cancerians: Frida Kahlo, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana.

Leo (Jul 23 - Aug 22)

Fixed Fire, ruled by the Sun. The fifth sign. Leo radiates. It is creativity, romance, the heart, the child of the zodiac who plays for the joy of playing. Leo placements are warm, generous, proud, and need to be seen. The shadow is vanity. The gift is courage of the heart. Famous Leos: Barack Obama, Madonna, Carl Jung.

Virgo (Aug 23 - Sep 22)

Mutable Earth, ruled by Mercury. The sixth sign. Virgo refines. It is craft, service, the small careful work that holds a life together. Virgo placements are precise, modest, observant, and often underestimated because they do not self-promote. The shadow is the inner critic. The gift is competence as an act of love. Famous Virgos: Mary Shelley, Beyoncé, Stephen King.

Libra (Sep 23 - Oct 22)

Cardinal Air, ruled by Venus. The seventh sign. Libra balances. It is partnership, beauty, justice, the meeting place of self and other. Libra placements are graceful, diplomatic, fair-minded, and often indecisive. The shadow is conflict avoidance. The gift is genuine relational intelligence. Famous Librans: Mahatma Gandhi, Oscar Wilde, John Lennon.

Scorpio (Oct 23 - Nov 21)

Fixed Water, ruled by Pluto and Mars. The eighth sign. Scorpio penetrates. It is intimacy, transformation, the truth that surfaces only when the surface is breached. Scorpio placements are intense, private, fiercely loyal, and unwilling to settle for the shallow version. The shadow is jealousy and control. The gift is emotional honesty without illusion. Famous Scorpios: Marie Curie, Pablo Picasso, Hillary Clinton.

Sagittarius (Nov 22 - Dec 21)

Mutable Fire, ruled by Jupiter. The ninth sign. Sagittarius expands. It is philosophy, foreign cultures, the search for meaning beyond the familiar. Sagittarius placements are open, optimistic, blunt, and constitutionally allergic to being fenced in. The shadow is tactlessness and restlessness. The gift is genuine faith. Famous Sagittarians: Mark Twain, Jane Austen, Walt Disney.

Capricorn (Dec 22 - Jan 19)

Cardinal Earth, ruled by Saturn. The tenth sign. Capricorn builds. It is structure, discipline, the long view, the slow construction of mastery. Capricorn placements are responsible, ambitious, dry-humoured, and reach their power late. The shadow is over-control. The gift is enduring competence. Famous Capricorns: Martin Luther King Jr, David Bowie, Michelle Obama.

Aquarius (Jan 20 - Feb 18)

Fixed Air, ruled by Saturn and Uranus. The eleventh sign. Aquarius reforms. It is community, vision, the future arriving early, the principled stand against the current arrangement. Aquarius placements are independent, cool, friendly, and slightly elsewhere. The shadow is detachment that hides as principle. The gift is the long view. Famous Aquarians: Charles Darwin, Oprah Winfrey, Bob Marley.

Pisces (Feb 19 - Mar 20)

Mutable Water, ruled by Jupiter and Neptune. The twelfth sign. Pisces dissolves. It is compassion, art, mysticism, the boundary that disappears when the self meets the larger field. Pisces placements are sensitive, imaginative, porous, and often gifted in the arts and the helping professions. The shadow is escape. The gift is imagination that goes all the way down. Famous Pisceans: Albert Einstein, Steve Jobs, Rihanna.
